Minister Sajith Premadasa says he accepts maximum devolution in a unitary country as the only solution to the national crisis.
Speaking as the chief guest at the third day of Enterprise Sri Lanka Exhibition held in Jaffna on Tuesday (10), the minister said that this alone will not solve all the problems, for political, economical and social parameters would be decisive for empowerment to bring solution to problems of all nationals.
Premadasa said that many people are asking him what his position is on the issue of the Tamil people in the North. He stressed that it is not his policy to say one thing to the North, another thing to the South and another to the foreign bodies.
Some of the leaders in this country had announced the 13 Plus in India and the 13 minus after they returned to Sri Lanka, Premadasa recalled.
He said provincial councils were established under the 13th Amendment as a solution to the national problem, however, it has become but a joke. Premadasa said he believes that the Provincial Council system should be strengthened to solve the problems faced by the Provincial Councils.
Although some people are trying to depict image that there is an internal crisis in the UNP regarding the presidential candidate these days, there is no such crisis, he added. Amid any democratic political movement such contradictions are inevitable, he emphasized.
The minister further added that the UNP respects people's freedom of expression. However, some party leaders tend to control the dissension within their parties, he added.
