President Maithripala Sirisena has sought the opinion of the Supreme Court regarding the possibility of holding provincial council elections before the presidential election, Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said.
In keeping with the unofficial information received, the Supreme Court hearing will begin on August 23, he added.
Deshapriya pointed out that the Supreme Court will issue its opinion within a week or 10 days after the hearing, upon which a decision in regard to upcoming polls can be taken.
Noting that the Elections Commission needs about 50 days to hold the provincial council election and about 60 days for the presidential election, the Commissioner said that if the provincial council election is called early, he will hold it and that he does not want to delay the presidential election for any reason. .
