Former Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of the Kattankudy Police Station, Ariyabandu Wedagedara says that during his service in Kattankudy, he received no complaints regarding Zahran Hashim’s extremist or terrorist activities. However, complaints about clashes between different sects of Islam were reported, he added.
He made this statement yesterday (18) before the special Parliament Select Committee appointed to investigate the Easter Sunday attacks.
He further said that during his tenure at the Kattankudy Police (2014-2017), Zahran Hashim’s group used weapons only once, and that was on 10th March 2017 when a clash erupted between a group of Zufi Muslims and Zahran’s gang.
When the Parliament Select Committee inquired about accusations that the Kattankudy Police didn’t pay attention to complaints regarding Zahran Hashim’s extremist activities, he stated that he refuses those accusations.
Actions were taken when these incidents were reported and in addition the Police Headquarters was also informed about them, he added.
However, the Easter Sunday attacks were like a tsunami, he said, adding that it is after the attacks that the police started to pay attention to the series of events that took place before that.
When a police team arrived in the location where a clash took place on 10th March 2017, Zahran was present at that place, former Kattankudy Police OIC revealed.
However, due to the tense situation, it was not possible to arrest Zahran Hashim, his brother Rilvan and Army Mohideen, and later they had fled the area, he added.
When the Parliament Select Committee questioned the former Kattankudy Police OIC regarding Zahran’s behavior in the 2015 presidential election and general election time, he said he is not aware of Zahran’s political links.
