Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne says he will resign from the government if Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera decided to import cigarettes from China.
He added that he opposes cigarette consumption, both as the Health Minister and as a doctor.
He went on to state that the President must use his executive powers to deal with this matter, and the progress that has been achieved during the past three years must not be destroyed.
The Health Minister revealed that the government spends more money for treatment of tobacco-caused diseases than the revenue generated from cigarette sales.
If Chinese cigarettes are imported for the consumption of Chinese nationals working in Sri Lanka, other foreign nationals working in Sri Lanka will demand the same in future, he added.
