Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has said that the government had promised to provide chemical fertilizers to the farmers free of charge during the presidential election, but had stated in its policy statement that Sri Lanka would be systematically directed to organic farming within 10 years.
He said that according to the budget presented by the government, only farmers who cultivate with organic fertilizers are entitled to relief.
Another phase of the "Nagarayen Nagarayata Gamin Gamata Dorin Dorata" program was held yesterday (24) in Walsapugala, Tissamaharama.
The Leader of the Opposition drew his attention to a number of issues facing the people of the area.
He said the government had allocated Rs. 4,000 million to develop non-toxic agriculture and Rs. 5,000 per hectare to remove herbicides from organic farming.
Premadasa questioned why private companies were allowed to import chemical fertilizers while allocating Rs. 35,000 million to farmers for organic fertilizer production.
In the midst of all this, he said that the government was playing a double role by stating in the President's announcement that organic farming policies would continue to be implemented in the country.
