Sri Lanka is facing the worst agricultural tragedy in recent history, said Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Leader and former President Maithripala Sirisena, addressing the 21st commemoration ceremony of late Prime Minister Lady Sirimavo Bandaranaike at the SLFP Headquarters yesterday (10).
"Why was Lady Sirimavo Bandaranaike a successful leader? She was a successful leader because she had an honest team. Any leader should have an honest team. No matter how cleaner the leader is, or how good the leader's vision is, if the former ministers of this country for the last three-to-four decades had been in Mr. Bandaranaike's government, he would have probably been killed earlier. It was the right wing of the party that killed Mr. Bandaranaike.
Today, talks are being made about fertiliser, so are about the food crisis. You know, agriculture is in a big mess. The farmer is lost. I think the worst agricultural tragedy in recent history is happening now.
I do not know if I will be able to go to Polonnaruwa in a few days. I do not know if I will be told not to come there. There has been a lot of sensitivity, impulsiveness and great pressure from the farmers," Sirisena said.
