State Minister of Finance Ajith Nivard Cabraal has stated that he will resign from the post of Member of Parliament in the coming days as he has accepted an invitation from the President to assume the post of Governor of the Central Bank.
The government minister made this statement in a statement to Lanka News Web.
Cabraal says the president has the ability to appoint him as governor of the Central Bank after he resigns as a member of parliament and then hopes to serve as governor of the central bank again, having served as governor for more than eight years.
He also explained the reason for expecting a post with cabinet powers.
"This is a difficult time. We have to deal with the world. In such a situation, if the Governor of the Central Bank has such a rank in the country, those actions will be accepted in the world. I think the country will benefit more from it. I think it would be good if the post gets such recognition. That is why a request has been made to the President to create such a situation. It will happen. It's essential."
Ajith Nivard Cabraal further stated that the post of Governor of the Central Bank is similar to that of a Cabinet Minister in many countries of the world.
