Deaths influenced by cancers, cardiac conditions or any other disease not affiliated with Covid-19 while the deceased being infected with the virus are not counted as Covid deaths, emphasised Dr. Sudath Samaraweera, Chief of the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, speaking to media yesterday (03).
"If a person infected with the Covid-19 infection dies by another disease, we do not record it. For an example, there were two more deaths reported to us, one was a Covid infected died of leukemia. In the case, Covid did not influence the leukemia condition, nor the death. Also, another person died of a weakened heart. A person with a heart condition. His death was not influenced with Covid either. In such circumstances, we do not count them as Covid deaths," he said.
The health sector itself has been levelling criticism against the Epidemiology Unit for quite some time that the statistics produced on the number of Covid-19 cases and deaths are unacceptable, alleging that the real numbers are being concealed.
