Three kilograms of rice could suffice for a family for a period of two weeks, said Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena speaking to a special press briefing held in the Ministry yesterday (05).
"We provide a relief package as an allowance for the News Year to customers who visit SATHOSA. The business sector in the whole country is in a state of turmoil (may be due to Social Media) as we offer these 12 items at a very competitive price such as Rs. 1000. Other institutions are bidding that these goods can be bought at a lower price. I state with responsibility that we have provided this package of goods with a guarantee from the government at a lower price than that prevailing market for high quality goods," the Minister said.
Question: Minister, is this relief package for only one family?
Answer: For now only one. Because one family has three kilos of rice. And one kilo of sugar. We believe it would suffice for a period of two weeks for a family.
It might be questionable whether the Trade Minister actually believes that the staple food of the people of Sri Lanka is porridge, not rice. It was the same Dr. Bandula Gunawardena who had once said that a person could live up to a period of one month with only Rs. 2,500.
