Bengamuwe Nalaka Thero reiteratred that Cannabis should be legalized in Sri Lanka, addressing a press conference held with a group of Ayurvedic doctors in Kelaniya yesterday (18).
On a previous occasion, the Thera had emphasized the importance of legalizing Cannabis to the Minister of Indigenous Medicine at the Ayurvedic Department.
"Cannabis, which is a herbal plant, in particular is banned from cultivation. The colonists banned the plant in the emphasis that this cannot be cultivated or used without a proper approval. But in 1984, an act was brought banning Cannabis the medicine from use. Why is that?" the Thera questioned.
In his demonstration that Cannabis is a medicine, Bengamuwe Thero went on saying that the plant was even accepted by Lord Buddha, questioning the government's hesitation of accepting the same.
Cannabis should be used as a medicine in healing patients, the Thera added, pointing out that the plant, therefore, should be legally recognized.
