The SLPP-led government of Sri Lanka has returned the license for Wayamba Distilleries Company to Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando with a tax relief, while people oppressed by the Covid-19 pandemic continue to suffer from food scarcity, revealed Medille Pangnaloka Thero.

In 2015, the Excise Department had banned Wayamba Distilleries Company from manufacturing spirits for not paying hundred millions of rupees of excise tax, the Thera reminded, disclosing that the Minister managed to reclaim its operations by his political power in the government turnover, from November 16, 2020.

The Thera also exposed a telephone conversation with Excise Commissioner General A. Bodaragama, citing sources that Bodaragama, who was set for retirement in December, is being extended for another year.

It is quite questionable as to whether this service extension is being granted due to Wayamba Distilleries, the Thera added.
