Underworld Leader Makandure Madush died in an exchange of fire: Police

Underworld Leader Makandure Madush who was in the custody of Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has reportedly died in an exchange of fire during an operation into a drug chain this (20) morning, Police said. 

Madush was accompanied by the CCD in an operation to find 22 kg of drugs hidden in an apartment complex in Maligawatta this morning, and members of the underworld have opened fire at them as they approached. 

In retaliation, Police have also opened fire, during which Madush was shot dead, according to Police. 

A Police officer too has been shot and injured, Police added. 

Makandure Madhush, who had once fled the country and lived  in Dubai for many years, was deported to Sri Lanka in 2019 after being arrested by Dubai Police over a drug offense.

Madush was under the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a year and a half, and was transferred to the custody of the CCD only four days ago, October 16.
