It has been officially announced yesterday (10) that Ranil Wickremesinghe will step down from the leadership of the United National Party. It was officially announced that Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Ravi Karunanayake, Daya Gamage and Vajira Abeywardena are contesting for the new leadership.
However, several more discussions were held in this regard yesterday and by the final round Daya Gamage had withdrawn from the leadership battle. Accordingly, only Akila, Ravi and Vajira are currently contesting for the UNP leadership.
Meanwhile, Ravi Karunanayake has submitted a proposal to the other two leadership candidates to resolve the leadership issue amicably.
Ravi Karunanayake has pointed out that the UNP received only 275,000 votes in this election and if the three of them try to create a conflict for leadership, they will lose 275,000. Sources said that he had suggested that if there was a vote for the leadership, the three of them would be divided and the party members would also be divided and that the issue should be resolved amicably without any competition.
Everyone has agreed and they are scheduled to meet again tomorrow (12).
The sources further stated that Ranil Wickremesinghe is not interfering in any of this and is pursuing a silent policy of allowing the leadership candidates to resolve the issue themselves.
