Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is preparing to sign himself off from his position as the Leader of United National Party, sources said.

Following the dramatic loss in the 2020 General Election, the long-running UNP leader has held deep discussions with his inner circle within the past days regarding the situation, during which it was understood that it is better to step himself down from the position for the betterment of the Party, according to sources.

However, amidst the uncertainty of who will be Wickremesinghe's successor in the position, the announcement of his resignation has become quite problematic, sources further added.

Despite requests to hand over the position to Ruwan Wijewardena, whose hereditary right, according to many critics, stands for it, those close to Wickramasinghe have warned that the Party will inevitably fall and be destroyed, was he to be handed over the position of UNP Leadership amidst such critical juncture, disclosed by sources.
