Former director of the Criminal Investigation Department SSP Shani Abeysekara has been arrested this morning.
According to reports, he is set to be produced before Gampaha Magistrate Court this evening.
Abeysekara was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division and statements were recorded on his account.
Former DIG Vass Gunawardena was remanded in custody in connection with the murder of Mohammed Siyam in 2013 on charges of possession of firearms and using them to commit crimes, and the CID arrested his wife, son and nephew.
A probe was conducted on the alleged possession of a firearm against former DIG Vaas Gunawardena, who was remanded in 2013 in regard to the Mohammed Siyam murder, and the Criminal Invsetigation Department had arrested his wife, son and a nephew.
A Police inspector had also been interrogated in regard to the case, and according to his statement, a stock of firearms supposed belonged to Gunawardena was hidden in a chicken coop in a residence in Kalagedihena, Gampaha.
The owner of the house and his wife were arrested based on an order issued by the Gampaha Magistrate and their testimonies revealed that the earlier evidence suggestive of the firearms recovered from their possesison were false, thereby disclosing that these firearms were planted in the site by former director of the CID, SSP Shani Abeysekara.
Based on the testimony, the Colombo Crimes Division has conducted a special investigation in to the matter and arrested the former CID director this morning.
According to reports, the Abeysekara is set to be produced before the Gampaha Magistrate Court within the next few hours.
