The leadership crisis in the United National Party has reached to a point worst in all aspects, whilst everyone loyal to the party expects a solvable closure in this week.
However, Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe, its leader, has no intention of handing over the leadership to another yet, according to sources, as he views that the Party he protected for twenty six years cannot simply be handed over to Mr. Sajith Premadasa who is surrounded according to him by a group of politically immatured people.
Wickremesinghe accordingly views that a leadership trident comprising Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, himself and Mr. Sajith Premadasa should continue the party processes until the secondary leadership is stabled, claimed by sources.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sajith Premadasa has no intention to leave the party at a moment in which the leadership is knocking behind his door.
Despite the strong insistence of his colleagues to form a separate political movement, Sajith Premadasa knows that it would be very disadvantageous to his career if he leaves the UNP at a risk of being labeled as the person who split the party apart.
Accordingly, Premadasa is preparing himself to play a role as the unofficial leader of the new political movement proposed by his faction without giving up on the UNP, in the same formula Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa applied when the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna was formed, sources divulged.
However, the coming few days would be very decisive and likely to result a drastic spin of how matters are being settled.
