While former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is to return to Lanka today (19), there is a huge turmoil spinning in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), political sources said.
Last week, Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike criticized the SLFP for its alliance with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), calling it a betrayal.
While abroad she had telephoned several SLFP organizers and had met with a few MPs who had decided to support the SLPP. There are rumors that two SLFP parliamentarians will join the UNP in the first round.
Especially when the current SLFP leader Maithripala Sirisena has currently withdrawn himself temporarily of the responsibilities, Chandrika Bandaranaike, daughter of Founder of SLFP, S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, intervening on the Party may have a severe impact on the Party organizers, political analysts pointed out.
