Liberal marker Mangala meets disfiguration within Sajith Faction

Minister Mangala Samaraweera, the most powerful of the Sajith Faction of the United National Party (UNP), has also been severely disfigured by its members, sources said.

The UNP has appointed a committee yesterday (18) to select the UNP's presidential candidate. Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne, Prime Minister's adviser Dinesh Weerakkody and Kabir Hashim and Ranjith Madduma Bandara on Sajith Faction have been appointed to the committee.

Significantly, Mangala Samaraweera, the most weighty person in the Sajith Faction, has not been named for this crucial committee. It is Sajith Premadasa himself who has advised to nominate a replacement for Mangala, according to sources.

Mangala Samaraweera was once the the marker of "liberalism" in Sri Lankan politics. He in his three decades of political career secured that icon. However, only two months ago the decimation to his liberalism arrived and he buried his thirty years of politics and joined the Sajith Faction upon winning him as the next president.

Sajith's adherence to traditional Sinhala Buddhist politics is the ultimate suicide of Mangala's liberal politics. As a result, Mangala, who had been a "liberal marker", continues to be a "liberal corpse".

It is not a simple phenomenon that Sajith Premadasa himself has deprived of appointing such a valuable asset into the committee crucial for his nomination.

We earlier reported that the affairs of the Sajith Faction are not being steered according to Sajith's will. This shadows the invisible fist that manages Sajith is able to remove a valuable asset like Mangala Samaraweera even at this critical time.
