The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (27) told the Kurunegala Magistrate Court that no evidence was discovered to prove allegations leveled against Dr Shafi Shaibdeen of the Kurunegala Hospital.

The CID presented a 210-page long report.

According to reports, the doctor in question had performed cesarean surgeries on 3479 Sinhala mothers, 860 Muslim mothers and 33 Tamil mothers.

The CID said in the report among the 615 complaints received against the doctor, 468 complaints were filed based on mere suspicion. 147 complaints are being investigated, and 13 mothers have been referred to the expert committee appointed to investigate the above-mentioned allegations.

The CID further said it recorded statements from doctors, nurses and other hospital staff members who involved in performing surgeries with Dr Shafi. However, no evidence has been found to prove that Dr Shafi performed sterilization procedures on mothers, the CID added.

The CID told the court that since allegations against the doctor in question have not been proved, it will discuss with the Defence Secretary regarding keeping him in custody.
