Senior DIG Ravi Wijegunawardana has been informed to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to record a statement in relation to the abduction and murder of two businessmen in Rathgama, Bussa.
The two businessmen were abducted, tortured and murdered by a group of policemen attached to Southern Province Special Investigations Unit. This unit operated under the then Southern Province DIG, Ravi Wijegunawardana.
Police officers who were arrested in connection with the murders revealed that the Senior DIG was not only aware of these murders, but also ordered to destroy the dead bodies.
But he was merely transferred to the Police Headquarters from the Southern Province; he was neither questioned nor sent on compulsory leave. Amid the tense situation that arose in the wake of the Easter Sunday attacks, he had been appointed as the Northern Province DIG.
However, the CID is continuing the investigations in this regard, and Ravi Wijegunawardana has been informed to appear before the CID next week.
