President Maithripala Sirisena has stated that he will not contest for the second tenure as the President.
Making a special statement at the cabinet meeting held yesterday (4), he revealed this.
The President had stated: “Addressing the nation the day I was sworn in, I stated this would be my first and last tenure. I promised that I will not contest again. I will fulfill that promise. I will not contest the presidential election, which is scheduled to be held in five months. You have to get ready for it.”
He added: “I cannot accept UNP in its current condition. But if it chooses to the right path, with youth leadership, I’m ready to support it.”
He also emphasized that he will not support Rajapaksas under any circumstance.
Even though the President expressed his opinion before UNP ministers about the next presidential election, so far he has not made any statement for members of Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
