After Lanka News Web (LNW) on 31st May published an article reminding the IGP Pujith Jayasundara’s assault on Samarakone Banda, a lift operator worked at the police headquarters, the police headquarters had reportedly decided to launch an investigation into it.
The police headquarters had reportedly instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to launch an investigation with regard to the assault.
The IGP assaulted Samarakone Banda in April 2017, because the latter failed to meditate in the morning in accordance with 3552 circular issued by the IGP. LNW, on 15th April 2017, revealed it.
The video footage of the assault went viral on social media, but law was not implemented against the IGP because of his connections with people who held high-ranking positions. Despite LNW’s repeated attempts and many complaints filed by Samarakone Banda, justice was not delivered. The Yahapalana Government, Rajapaksa’s 51-day Government and the United National Front, they all failed to do something.
Taking a decision to launch an investigation into the above-mentioned assault is indeed an exemplary move.
