The Cabinet has reportedly approved the proposal presented by President Maithripala Sirisena to ban the import of chainsaws to Sri Lanka.

In the President's capacity as the Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment, a ban to import all chainsaws has been presented, and the government had identified that the major reason for deforestation in Sri Lanka is because unauthorized chainsaws are being imported to serve the purpose big time.

According to the Department of Government Information, several implementations have already been launched with the intention of increasing the country's forest density from 29.7% t0 30% by the year 2030.

Currently, the number of registered chainsaws in Sri Lanka exceeds 82,000.

The President had submitted the relevant proposal to ban all chainsaws from being imported under the Imports and Exports (Control) Act No. 01, 1969, to the Cabinet.
