The 15th commemoration of slain Journalist Subramaniam Sugirtharajan was held at East Journalists Association, Batticaloa yesterday (24).
The event was jointly organised by Trincomalee District Media Association, Jaffna Club and Southern Media Organisations, at the patronage of Mr. L. Devathiran, President of Eastern Media Association.
Attending the event, members discussed that 41 of the 44 journalists and media personnel killed in the recent past were Tamil.
Media persons in the North, the East and the South will continue fight in arms for justice for the victims, especially in the face of the plight of the majority of the families affected by the tragedy, they opined.
The media collective further stated that the State Minister of Housing should be brought to notice of the provision of houses to familities who are not yet entitled to a house, adding that Sugirtharajan's two children and wife, who are struggling without a roof, should also be helped in the same manner.
Sugirtharajan was shot dead on January 24, 2006 near the Governor's Secretariat in Trincomalee, for going public with photographic evidence revealing that a group of students were murdered on Nilaveli beach in Trincomalee in 2006.
